BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS

Through research, Youth Concern on Environment and Development aim to leverage the potential contribution of the private sector in Uganda and facilitate efforts to build Responsible Business Conduct through multi-stakeholder dialogue approach.
We enhance access to information to victims of harms for them to have meaningful access to judicial remedies. We build capacities of Land and Mineral Rights Defenders in monitoring, documentation and reporting on human rights violations and abuse.
We demand from corporations and other business entities to constantly conduct due diligence measures in all their operations and value chains in order to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for how they address their adverse human rights impacts.

We advocate for the adoption of corporate codes of conduct that expressly acknowledge the constitutional rights that corporations and other businesses are bound by and that make provision for the consideration of complaints from vulnerable communities or individuals adversely affected by investment activities.
YCED promotes cooperation between companies, grassroot civil society organizations, local suppliers, local governments and other stakeholders in tackling human right violation in the mining sector.

What is the purpose of YCED’s Business and Human Rights program?

This program seeks to engage the private sector in Uganda to uphold responsible business practices, ensuring that corporations respect human rights and mitigate any negative impacts on communities affected by their operations.

How does YCED support victims of human rights violations?

YCED provides access to information and resources for victims, helping them understand their rights and access legal remedies. We also train Land and Mineral Rights Defenders to effectively monitor, document, and report human rights abuses.

What role do companies play in human rights protection according to YCED?

YCED advocates for corporations to conduct regular due diligence in their operations and supply chains. We push for corporate codes of conduct that respect constitutional rights and establish channels for communities to voice concerns about investment impacts.
